Alternatives to Alleviating Menopausal Symptoms

Yoga can help naturally relieve menopause symptoms.

Hormonal Replacement Treatments are the most popular way to treat menopause, but even though these estrogen replacement hormones may seem natural, they are in fact riddled with synthetic chemicals that are not safe to the human body at all.   The good news is that artificial (and potentially dangerous!) hormonal replacement therapy is not the only route for treating menopausal symptoms—in fact, making some simple lifestyle adjustments can make a world of difference in your mood and can help you improve some of the worst symptoms of menopause.

Exercise

Keeping active with aerobic exercises has been proven to improve moods and relieve hot flashes.  Not only that, but strength-training and weight-training exercises can strengthen bone mass, helping to reduce bone loss caused by the onset of osteoporosis.  A great form of exercise is yoga. The series of movements and strengthening poses in conjunction with calming the inner mind can help alleviate menopausal symptoms such as mood swings, hot flashes and depression.  Yoga studios have even begun incorporating special classes with regimens tailored especially for menopausal women.  Whatever physical activity you choose, whether it be practicing yoga or simply power-walking, it is important to remain active and to keep your body and organs stimulated.

Change Your Diet

A healthy diet should consist of foods fortified with high levels of calcium, which helps to maintain bone health and slow bone loss caused by osteoporosis. Average daily calcium intake should be at least 700mg, and can be met by consuming calcium-rich foods such as dairy products and leafy green vegetables. Also, load up on Vitamin D, which also reduces the risks of osteoporosis.  Our bodies naturally produce Vitamin D by absorbing sunlight through our skin, but eating Vitamin D-rich foods such as oily fish or adding a vitamin supplement to our diets can also help, too.

Women experiencing menopause should avoid foods with too much Vitamin A, which has been shown to increase the risk of osteoporosis.  Also, women should avoid any caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods, which are common triggers for aggravating hot flashes and mood swings.

Explore Other Natural Options

Acupuncture is an alternative treatment for menopause, which works by increasing vital energy and promoting blood flow throughout the body. Some natural remedies, such as chemicals deriving from soy plants, contain active agents that mimic estrogen and can help relieve menopausal symptoms.
