Hormone Replacement Treatments: Natural or Not?

Think your estrogen replacement hormones are all-natural? Even so, estrogen replacement hormones are hardly sufficient in mimicking our own bodies’ cycles.  Simply guess-and-checking for the right dosage of artificial hormones is not enough.  It is impossible to replicate this amount—scientifically, the amount of estrogen our body secretes during a menstrual cycle is a mere billionths of a gram.  It is a small amount, but has extreme effects on the body.  So, you can imagine the chaos that tampered “natural” substances can cause to your body’s delicate system!

And it’s not just women who are affected. A recent blog post from Tuesday’s Horse exposed the inhumane treatment that these mares suffer to provide the urine for the Premarin. These pregnant horses are kept in a tiny stall for their entire, 11-month pregnancy (the similarity to veal calves is striking and terrifying) and the farmers limit their drinking water in order to create more concentrated estrogen in the urine. The mares are used over and over again until they cannot get pregnant any longer. The fact that these horses are suffering when there are effective alternatives out there is shocking and depressing.
